"23"

Original work: mixed media. Giclees available only.

At the age of 23, Damien left Belgium to sail to Hawaii on October 30, 1863. He was still a Brother, not yet a priest. That journey from Belgium to Hawaii was a difficult, long and harrowing trip. On March 19, 1864, 140 days after he left Belgium, Damien arrived in Honolulu. He ‘celebrated’ a birthday during that journey. That’s FIVE long months of an ocean voyage. He was ordained a priest in May 1864, 2 months after his arrival.

This series commemorates the life work of Fr. Damien.
