The bottom image in this painting is a photo taken about 3 years after Damien arrived in Kalawao. The three buildings above it are St. Philomena church. It was built in 1872 and after Damien arrived in 1873, he added on and subsequently, added on again.
Damien built over 300 homes and structures in the 16 years that he was there.
